Servers

The term “servers” is a widely used word in the IT industry.

Servers – Theoretically, any computer that shares it’s resources with clients is functioning as a server. So if you are at home and using one computer to access a shared file on another computer, the other computer is acting as the server. This is called client-server architecture.

A vast number of systems use this type of architecture. But, for all practical purposes, I am referring to a dedicated server here.

A Dedicated server is similar to a computer

-One of the big differences between the two is servers use their horsepower on backend processing tasks like databases as opposed to running heavy resource loads like desktop graphics processing. A server provide resources across a network or networks to your computer or internet connected device. There are lots of different kinds of server platforms; file & print servers, E-Mail servers, database, web, application, media server…Ok, I’m starting to sound like Bubba naming the different ways to prepare shrimp. Most of these services can be deployed in the cloud too. Network Security should be considered when deploying a server.

Routers and Switches

Routers

A Router is a network device that sends data packets across networks. Routers connect 2 networks together. Whether its two LANs, WANs or both. For example, a router in your home or office connects your LAN to the internet. Here is another example; there is the Widget Company. They have two offices, one in Los Angeles and one in New York City. A router can be used to connect the two office networks together. Routers vary in cost and abilities depending on your needs.

Switches

A Switch builds or creates networks. In most of today’s networks, switches are what connect servers, computers and printers in the same network (the accounting floor for example), allowing them to effectively communicate with each other. Switches and routers are the core foundation or building blocks for data/voice communication. There are unmanaged and managed switches. Unmanaged switches are plug in and go. They work right out of the box. They usually have less capacity than a managed switch and are most often found in home networks or desktop switches. Managed switches are more robust and have a much richer feature set allowing them to be configured, monitored locally or remotely, giving you much more flexibility and network control.

Network Design

Design – Requires innovation, and the ability to think outside of the box. Small and medium sized businesses usually don’t have a large technology budget like the larger businesses and corporations have. Small businesses can’t afford to throw down money for redundant data pipes, redundant firewalls, redundant backbones, clustered server environments for failover, redundant backup systems, redundant AC and humidity control systems for the server room, and so on and so on. Oh, and did I mention you are going to need to hire a team of IT pros to manage and support the network? Having a local network, completely redundant, with 99.99% uptime is idealistic, but not realistic for small and medium sized business networks. That’s why it is so important to know the services available, and how to apply them for your business needs during network design.

There are lot’s of options to take advantage of that won’t break the bank. Besides, leveraging the technologies that best fit your requirements, and a price tag that doesn’t completely destroy the budget is ultimately the end goal right?

Network Cabling

For information technology, data and voice cabling are an integral part of building networks. Servers, computers, printers and phones are cabled unless you have a complete wireless environment, but even then you still have cables. A proper installation should look clean, with everything labeled appropriately, according to the design (if available). An example of proper cabling is on the left. There are also a couple examples of what not to do. It is much more cost effective to plan out the cabling structure with your current needs and adding room for growth in the beginning than it is to add drops as you go. The cable itself is fairly cheap, it’s the labor of pulling the cable that is the bulk of the cost.

For most projects, unless really small, this is something I prefer to outsource. I can pull cable, terminate cable to patch panels, install keystone jacks, make pc patch cables, I just prefer not to.
